All, Thanks for advice.  

I forgot about switching terminals.   That may work.

I believe I get lock-up from software.   
Hardware/temp seems OK.   

I can count on a lock up from the screen saver.   It
will run fine for hours but every once in a while it
will hang just running overnight.    The overday 
I hung running x-cd-roast though.

The major headache is that once it locks and I 
hard reboot, I have a large 80G hard disk
and running a file system check takes a long time.
