A few PSs:
1. The system will boot from the downloaded disk (disk 1), and I have
almost successfully installed the system -- one problem is that the six
"virtual terminals" are available. Another problem was that my first
attempt under Reiser did not work at all, the almost successful attempt
was with JFS for all but boot. I'm now reinstalling with JFS for all
but / and /boot.
2. I learned that those high speed CD-Rom readers (with features like
antivibration) are not always perfect (or at least mine isn't). I tried
reading the md5sum from the burned CDs on such a drive (on my working
Mandrake 7.2 box) and got different results each time (tried 6 times).
