What's wrong with Red Hat?
They give you any editor you want and all the startup scripts and /etc files are out in the open to configure. I can partition the way I want and select the packages I want at install. I don't see why it doesn't put me in control as compared to slack.
I think they do a nice job of keeping up to date with errata and security problems.. they email me updates and I can grab and install new packages very easily.
