Another followup.  I looked at the ads.  All the ads I saw were for
Winmodems except __maybe__ the one at Staples.

Staples advertises a Zoom 56K DualMode Internal Data/Fax Modem for
$29.97  (actually $49.97 plus tax - $20 rebate).

It complies with V.90 and K56 flex standards (good).

It is PCI bus (good, assuming you have a free PCI slot).

To be clear, I can't tell from the add whether it is a standard modem or
a Winmodem -- therefore it might be a standard modem.

And now, I'll drop the subject of internal modems (unless someone else
brings it up)!
