[Lvlug] Cable or DSL?

That is a good point Greg Knight brought up. Most
services will not support anything but Windows and
Mac. When I called Fastnet a few years back to get
some information so I could connect using Linux and a
modem, the guy said they do not support connecting
with Linux. I pressed saying I did not care if they
supported it or not and that I wanted the information.
He supplied it without further hassle.
When they installed my dsl, the gentleman only did it
through windows. He let me know that it was not
difficult to get it working in Linux and offerred some
pointers, but he was not allowed to set it up through
Linux. In hindsight, it would seem a lot faster and
easier to set up through Linux than it would through
Windows for testing purposes.
I have heard some cable modem services use proprietary
software for the one-way connection that is supported
only by windows. I am sure there are hacks out there,
and I don't think you will have too much difficutly
getting the RCN service to work with Linux. Others on
this mailing list have done so, so there is your
Randy, I wonder if it will work with DOS.
