I think the easiest way may be to ADD another new hard drive. Doesn't everyone need more space?
You can get a tiny 10GB drive real cheap or spend $100 for a huge drive. When you select where to install Linux, just stay off hda (or whatever the original Windows drive is)

I once tried a "partitionless" install where the is a desktop icon in windows for restarting in linx with a loopback files system. It was horribly slow! It turned a PIII into a 486.
