First, a few questions
Who are you logging in as?
Are there any error messages during boot or when you log in?
Is there anything displayed when you execute:
ls -a
You should see some hidden files like .bash_profile and .bashrc
Execute
echo $PATH
What is the path for your account?
startx is in /usr/X11R6/bin so what happens if you issue
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx
What type of install did you do (i.e.; workstation, custom)?
