They are not alone in this but the Willow Creek and Saddleback
models have promoted a destructive confusion between believers-
gathered and outreach.
Absent an intentional time for believers to gather - a fellowship
is badly weakened.
The SBC model has sort of shoved that off to Sunday evening,
but that has typically been opened to anyone and is generally
very poorly attended because families are transitioning to
preparation for an early Monday & the school and work week.
Sunday evening 'service' in the SBC appears to be an anachronism
of agricultural days that tradition-bound folks refuse to release -
even as they are incapable of justifying it. It is kind of a superstitious
thing with them.
Sunday School prior to celebration/service/whatever is the large
gathering of the fellowship also makes little sense. The pastor
presents the key theme and then the fellowship processes it in
small group *after* makes more sense. Again, forget about
convincing the tradition-bound folks to see the wisdom - it's
like trying to get the Pope to alter a RC ritual practice.
