An interesting thought. Was Adam created imperfect because he could
not continue his species?

extension there would be no need to multiply - animals included.
The need to reproduce only comes into play when there is risk of
death. Imagine if there was no death but animals and man could
reproduce - the numbers would grow exponentially for eternity, quickly
overwhelming the world.
The bible does not explicitly state that animals (or anything)
reproduced before the fall - and even in the case of man eve was
created to fulfil the need for companionship - not the need to
reproduce. After all Adam and Eve had no children until after the
fall - suggesting that reproduction was not needed/possible until
after the fall - at which point God allowed it since it was now needed
to continue the species.
The first reference to offspring is in Genesis 2:16 which is after the
fall and is to say that childbearing is on it's way and it will hurt.
Through all this I can see nothing to suggest that Adam was created as
non-gender specific and there is no need for him to be so in order to
explain what occurs
