Yes, I know, there are many open source implementations of proprietary 
technologies, and nobody has a problem with them.

It's just that these are wholly spawned  and bred by Microsoft and I 
fear that the Open Source implementations will be prone to fall to the 
same limitations and vulnerabilities (not necessarily code-wise, but by 
*architecture*).

Not to mention the inevitable patent questions...
