Ahhh, Debian & the kinks ... after way too many unproductive 
hours
trying to get Debian to assist rather than impede 
productivity I moved
on to a couple of user-friendly distros based on Debian and 
then away
from it entirely.

 From your comments it sounds as though despite all of the 
fanfare
Debian remains a developers-distro rather than a 
productivity-ready
users distro.
