We use drupal hard.

And it works very well for us.
That said, I too am in the process of a complete re-write, and am moving to
WordPress.
It turns out we don't use the community-geared features of drupal. So a lot of
it goes to waste.
WordPress has been very easy for me to customize. I've done several sites with
it now, and it can be turned into a CMS easily. Nice thing about it, you can
update it automatically. This has been a HUGE issue (notice the CAPS) for the
drupal sites. We did some pretty cool customization, then drupal was upgraded
because of security concerns. If we apply the upgrade, our site breaks. SO I
have to dig into the security concerns and manually patch the one site. It is
too cumbersome to maintain.
Best of luck to you.
