No way I want to be dependent on the Internet to develop
and/or access my apps., not to mention the *inevitable*
security vulnerabilities.

Google's business model is a mess, bad as MS, plus an
anti-America bias.

Here are some potential alternatives.

Andrew Office Suite  http://www.cs.cmu.edu/%7EAUIS/  (new to me)
KDE Office Suite http://koffice.kde.org/ (bulky with dependencies)
Corel Suite http://koffice.kde.org/  (commercial)
Gnome Office Suite http://live.gnome.org/GnomeOffice (no graphics app)
