I retract my question!

1. Talk about vague!  But the answers were in the (outdated) MGP 
documentation.  It wants the _name_ of the _font_, from fonts.dir, not 
the filename of the font as suggested in the samples.mgp file.  Don't 
use the tfont and tmfont keywords, which refers to the use of FreeType1. 
  Use xfont keyword, which invokes X font system (Xft2).  Fonts work 
fine now.

2. The size the SYNTAX file refers to is the size of the picture! 
Easily found via ImageMagick.  I got full screen now!

MGP is pretty neat.  I think this will work fine.
