Sounds like an xorg.conf problem to me. If you can boot into linux 
single and check the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file using vim or vi you might 
see the problem. Checking your /var log might help also to pinpoint the 
problem. Sometimes the monitor will go out as a safety measure when the 
xorg.conf settings (resolution settings) are out of whack.
