.. and yes you right about the free version of unrar.. I got it working so I could unpack a pdf file within a rar file, but it still was not working that great.

I don't know of a GUI that does it by itself. From what I know, they all
depend on the cli program being installed. In the case of zip files, it's
typically unzip, which is provided by default iirc. In the case of unrar you
have the choice. The unrar package is a non free one. There is also an
unrar-free package, but it doesn't work as well.
Konqueror uses Ark embedded by default. In Debian, they keep this default,
using Ark as a kio for virtual zip or tar protocols. You can choose to right
click on the files and open them with Ark manually, or directly to extract
them. In the case of rar files, once you have unrar/unrar-free installed, you
don't need to worry about the kio since it doesn't exist. This means opening
a rar file from Konqueror should always open Ark. In Kubuntu, we have chosen
to have that behaviour by default for all kind of archives, so that every
archive file (zip, tar.gz, tar.bz2, rar, etc.) opens with Ark rather than the
possibly existing kio.
Hope it helps :)
