I have Debian Stable (Sarge) set up on an old K6-350, and it just flies. I
did a webinstall, and the base system + Samba weighed in at around 270MB.
Just remember to put your data on a separate partition, that way if the OS
goes south you can reinstall it & not touch the data. So, yes, Debian is
recommended!
