I haven't used Debian much myself. But a number of people I respect don't use anything else. I doubt you could go wrong with it. Excepting perhaps if there is some reason you need the latest versions of software, then there are "issues".
I use Ubuntu for a number of smallish file servers for myself and clients. It works. A basic install can be done in about 300MB leaving all your disk storage available for real data and even your RAM too if you can resist the temptation to install X windows.
