The New Jerusalem and Roman Catholic RSV are somewhat
denomimationally-specific texts which would cause massive
confusion to most outside a few specific denominations.
My son was just reading a quote from Corrie TenBoom
where she noted the elimination of denominationalism
and nationalism among fellow prisoners in the Nazi
torture and death camps.
She reflected that God had managed to work past the
darkness she had observed both there and inside the
churches of her home town tucked behind their black
wrought-iron fences and layers of doctrine.
I think that if were are to be responsible we have
to keep denominationalism as far away from the
forefront as possible and that includes recommending
texts that contain materials only recognized by certain
denominations and/or that require high level interpretation
to avoid wrong understandings.
NET, NASB, Amplified, Living translations are all
pretty denominationally neutral.
NIV is very weak but also somewhat neutral.
The non-Elizabethian versions of the KJV are generally
denominationally neutral.
The Message uses the 1950's-1970's era lingo familar
to the author. Some find it helpful, I find it distracting
and confusing to many -- it is definitely not a good study
Bible!
I have used the NRSV but would not recommend it to
a Biblical novice.
Most of the others may not also be good recommendations
for a Bible novice.
IMHO ... doc
