SMTP is simple mail transfer protocol, and it is how mail gets moved
from source user to destination user, where "to destination user"
means it finally lands on a server, dropped into the mailbox held for
that user.  It includes the possibility of intermediate store-and-
forward if necessary (esp. for destinations that aren't actually
IP-attached), bulk queuing, periodic delivery retries for remote
servers that are found to be unavailable, ...

IMAP and POP are for client access to their mailboxes in their
servers' repositories.
