I'm not sure but I think the GPL was in reaction to someone taking code
RMS had written and going proprietary with it--like the BSD license
allows for.  Weak copyright laws would push all software towards a BSD
style license.  Right now authors have a choice.  No proprietary vendor
is FORCEd to use GPL code and affect his own work.  He does so or does
NOT by CHOICE.
