you can boot some live CDs and run backups that way.  If you get one
that can copy itself into RAM then you can use the burner if that is the
drive you booted with.  I know Morphix had this option but it is quite
old now.  the latest Knoppix has this option but it requires alot of
ram.  you might see if sysrescuecd has it.  http://www.sysresccd.org/
