I suspect you are making a bigger deal than this is.  Did you install
the OS?  If so, did you include Gnome?  Did the installer give you a
choice?

If not install,  put the cd back in and install it.  There should be a
package manager in the K-menu under settings or System.

If it's already installed--which I suspect it is--then you only need to
choose GNOME at the login screen.  Look for the word 'SESSION' and click
it.  It will show gnome as one of the choices.
