that's the idea behind bottom posting. numbers 2 and 4 on the list
should go together, but i put them separately so that i could focus on
each of them properly. i hate bottom posting when the person just clicks
reply and adds their 3 words at the bottom. there are times when i
actually remove all the text from the previous e-mail because it isn't
actually relevant. the only text of the previous mail you should leave
is that which is relevant. that's the essence of bottom posting and
trimming replies.
i'm on a number of mailing lists (including some with over 1000
members), and i don't always read all the e-mails, so if i come in to a
thread half way through (which i do from time to time), then i hate
reading the reply first and then having to wade through miles and miles
of previous e-mails (all replied, etc), just to find out what the heck
this person is replying to.
here's a nice article explaining why it's better to bottom post than to
top post: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/g.mccaughan/g/remarks/uquote.html
please note that i used to top post too, and since i started using
mailing lists, i've changed to bottom posting. i've had discussions on
other lists, time and time again, and it always ends up the same:
(bottom posting + edited quotes) is better than (top posting).
there's my ZAR 0.02 worth (i.e. 2 south african cents, which are worth
way less than 2 us cents)
