Ubuntu Hating & Too Many Choices?

I must say, there seems to be a lot of negative criticism against Gutsy these days. Sure there are a lot of good things, but a good deal of people that I know seem to have had problems upgrading and in some cases doing clean installs. I guess I’ve been lucky; as all my installs and upgrades have been smooth. This laptop here has been upgraded twice now, from dapper to fiesty and from fiesty to gutsy without much of a glitch. Sure there was that issue with having multiple kernels installed but this was largely due to me tinkering around with stuff. It was easily fixed, that it was. I did an upgrade at work and then a clean install on my new system, all without a hitch or a hiccup. Transferring my home directory contents from my old work machine to my new one was a breeze too.

Ok, well, there was one glitch I recall; and that was with f-spot. It seems the version of f-spot I had installed wanted the older version of sqlite and not backing up my f-spot database I inadvertently wiped out my tags and such and had to re-import all my photos in and then remove the duplicates because somehow I re-imported multiple times.

That got me thinking as to whether I should try another manager. I’ve used both gThumb and Digikam in the past; plus there are a few others out there I have not tried (Picasa, I did, but only to look at). I really liked Digikam, but I found the tagging feature of f-spot just superb.

Well now I’m fussing here; do I want to just re-tag my photos or give digikam a shot? I think the latter is what I am going to do. I have my images imported and we’ll go from there. Right now both Digikam and F-spot are working for me. I’ll give Digikam a good week and see whether I stick with it.

AAAUUUUGH! And Mario Galaxies

So the daughter is over here playing Mario Galaxies and I figured I would finally put Phantom Hour Glass to rest. I’ve been at the end stage for a while I was just running around trying to get everything. So I said enough, let’s do this. I’m down in the final dungeon and heading towards the last baddie; I’m going up, up, up the stairs when I get to the top the screen goes black. I wait a bit but nothing happens. I wait a bit more and then to my horror I notice the power light is not on. I had not charged my ds in a while and I did not pay attention it was on red. Of all the times for this to happen! Oh the pain!

Now on to other matters, Mario Galaxies. Wow! This game is a dream! It’s so beautiful and amazing. Now there are many people who did not care for Mario Sunshine (I did, I have yet to meet a Mario game I do not like) so they bill this as the true successor to Mario 64. I will grant them that. This game is amazing and the Wii controls suite it perfectly. It takes a bit getting used to the weird gravity, but once you do it makes the challenges all the more fun. I’m really digging this game.

Let’s face it, any game that has Avery standing up on the couch cheering and giving hi-fives when cool things happen has to be a great game. I hear this is the highest rated game on the Wii so far, and I can see why. If you have a Wii, this is a must buy!

Geeks in the Making

Ah, the beauty of this, 2 geeks in the training; making pappa proud. I had to take a picture of my aughters – Paige and Avery, using two laptops on the couch. Both laptops are running Ubuntu. Avery is viewing My Little Pony videos on Google Video and Paige is playing Neopets. It’s a wonderful site to behold!

Harry Potter

Filed under: Life — dann @ 1:28 am

Well, after some procrastination I finally picked up reading the Harry Potter series back in August. Tonight I just finished the final book, the Deathly Hallows. Wow, what an amazing series. I cannot recommend the books enough; fantastic stuff. If you have only seen the movies thus far, you are missing out on so much. In fact, after having read the books, the movies pale in comparison.

From start to finish, I was riveted. The ending of the series while sad, was fitting and well done. I was amazed at how so much came together and stuff innocuously appearing the the previous books had baring on the tales end.

I don’t want to reveal anything about the books so as not to spoil the story. Again, if you have not read them, do so. You will not be disappointed.
