Ubuntu Hating & Too Many Choices?
I must say, there seems to be a lot of negative criticism against Gutsy these days. Sure there are a lot of good things, but a good deal of people that I know seem to have had problems upgrading and in some cases doing clean installs. I guess I’ve been lucky; as all my installs and upgrades have been smooth. This laptop here has been upgraded twice now, from dapper to fiesty and from fiesty to gutsy without much of a glitch. Sure there was that issue with having multiple kernels installed but this was largely due to me tinkering around with stuff. It was easily fixed, that it was. I did an upgrade at work and then a clean install on my new system, all without a hitch or a hiccup. Transferring my home directory contents from my old work machine to my new one was a breeze too.
Ok, well, there was one glitch I recall; and that was with f-spot. It seems the version of f-spot I had installed wanted the older version of sqlite and not backing up my f-spot database I inadvertently wiped out my tags and such and had to re-import all my photos in and then remove the duplicates because somehow I re-imported multiple times.
That got me thinking as to whether I should try another manager. I’ve used both gThumb and Digikam in the past; plus there are a few others out there I have not tried (Picasa, I did, but only to look at). I really liked Digikam, but I found the tagging feature of f-spot just superb.
Well now I’m fussing here; do I want to just re-tag my photos or give digikam a shot? I think the latter is what I am going to do. I have my images imported and we’ll go from there. Right now both Digikam and F-spot are working for me. I’ll give Digikam a good week and see whether I stick with it.
