Whats on Linux for
Christians
|
|
Don't fear the
Pengin: First off, let me mention that
although this website is called Linux for Christians, I
am not in any way opposed to using *any* Free/Open
Source operating system. Some other Free Unix OS's I
highly recommend would be the BSD's (Free,
Net, and Open), and there are others you can
find as well. They all work very well, and for the most
part everything on this site should have almost direct
application to any free unix type OS.
Linux is
Functional: So, why should you or your
Church use Linux? Well there are quite a few good
reasons. First and foremost is functionality. Linux can
do in most cases everything you will need and want.
Whether your needs are personal like general home
computing or keeping records and the like at your
church.
Linux is
Useable: Another great reason for
running Linux is it's Usability. Linux has come a
*long* way since it's inception and the installation
and user interfaces now available really reflect it's
maturity.
Linux is
Available: The Availability of Linux is
a great asset! Linux is readilly available legally
right on the internet and is also carried by most every
computer software store as well. There is no need to be
technically oriented just to get a copy.
Linux is
Stable: Linux and it's associated
software has a huge advantage over more expensive
operating systems in that it is more stable. While some
OS companies may argue this point, the fact is that
Linux and Open Source software is made primarilly by
the people and for the people. Linux has an extensive
set of dedicated programers and testers - more than
could possibly be on the payroll of any corporation.
The stability of Linux reflects in the dedication and
sheer numbers of it's programers working together to
make a good operating system.
The Price is
Great!: Probably the icing on the cake
for using Linux would be it's price! Linux for the most
part is absolutely *FREE*. You can download your favorite Linux
distribution right off the internet and plop it on your
computer, your friends computer, or an entire network
of computers without worrying about multiple licensing
issues, or registration hassles, etc.. Most computer
stores carry at least one version of Linux in a boxed
set that you can purchase inexpesively as well. The
great thing about getting it at a store is if you are
new to Linux, the boxed set comes with a printed manual
set (which is really what you are paying for). So
instead of spending a lot of money on an operating
system, consider saving some of the budget and trying
Linux instead!
