IPOD Shuffle in Ubuntu

I went out and bought a IPOD Shuffle last night (the 1giger

) and was not sure what to expect upon plugging it into the USB port on my laptop for the first time. I had seen some post about gtkpod that was spouse to work with the shuffle in Linux so I decided to give it a try.

But first after pulling the shuffle out of the box I just plugged it straight into one of the USB ports in the back of my laptop. To my surprise Ubuntu automaticly detected it and mounted it up. I said cool! No need to mount it my self or anything. Clicking on the "Computer" icon I noticed that there was a new icon there called ipod double clicking on it took my right into the IPOD Shuffle. Once viewing the IPOD Shuffle I noticed there was no file system. After playing about for a bit I had transferred some pictures and files to it just to check it out. It works just like a USB flash drive!

Now I decided to compile gtkpod... After I fired it up I started to browse around all the menus in gtkpod and I noticed a option to create the IPOD file system. So I choose that and then looked back into my shuffle and there was some newly created folders. using gtkpod I was able to transfer over some TLLTS podcasts and some mp3's... After a few seconds the transfer was complete so I unplugged it and hit play.... AND IT WORKED!

I was very happy with the shuffle and the fact that I had it working in Linux with no trouble at all!

cool. The same thing happened with my iAudio M3. I googled around to see if it had linux support and it said i needed to do some complex mount command, but when i plugged it in konquerors 'media:/' service automatically detected it and mounted it fine. (note: im running kubuntu though not ubuntu) actually I have to bring knoppix everywhere to connect it to other computers because the driver installer for Windows requires a serial key and I lost it

and they say linux has bad hardware support

Hey, can these iPod shuffles be fitted with a linux kernel, or are you just talking about file-swaping support?

iPod Shuffles are just USB key drives. It can't be fitted with a Linux kernel.
