Hope everyone had a good turkey day.

I had some free time today and installed Ubuntu netbook remix on my Aspire One. So easy even a caveman can do it! I first installed the remix image located here to thumb drive following the instructions located on the Ubuntu netbook remix page. I then rebooted the aspire with the thumb drive plugged in and about 20min later had a working ubuntu system. WIfi works without any problem (although the wifi indicator lights don’t work.).

The only thing that didn’t work was the sd card reader on the right side. The one on the left side seems to work with no problem. I also applied a fan mod found on this page because by default the fan seems to run continually. This simple mod shuts down the fan until the temp reaches 70c.

Once I find the fix to the card reader all will be perfect! I recomend everyone give this a try if they have a Aspire One.

I made a bit of an impulse buy last night. I stopped by the local circuit city and bought one of these. Now I know how Dann feels about his eeepc. This thing is so cool! It’s not much larger than a hardcover book, has a keyboard that is very usable. It runs a tweaked version of Fedora so once you unlock the real menu you can use the add/remove program to load rpm’s from the repository’s. I’ll have some more to say about on the show this once I have some more time to play with it.

It would seem that my post have changed from being a quarterly thing to more of a twice a year thing. Sorry about that but I’ve just never found it that easy to talk about myself. Oh well, be that as it may, Linc (the master of all things BASH) has written a couple of scripts that if you have a Tivo series 2 recorder and run Linux you need to get.

The first script is great for the times that you just need to get one or two shows off your tivo. You run the script and it gets a listing from your Tivo, puts it into file which you then can edit out all the shows you don’t want to download. After you run the edited file, you’ll end up with a nice xViD of the show that tTvo recorded.

The second script is a bashpodder clone for tivo. You set it up to run as a cron job and it will download from Tivo nightly while remembering what it already has so as not to download it again. In this version you have the choice to encode it to an xViD file or to encode it for viewing on your Nokia tablet.

Both these scripts complement my Myth box because the way I’m set up right now, my Tivo has the converter box attached to it so it gets all the channels and my myth box only gets basic cable. Now I can have the best of both.

I had a great time at OLF this year. It was great meeting up and talking with our listeners. It was also great to meet up again with my co-hosts that I haven’t seen since everyone has moved from the Lehigh Valley (except Pat). We’ll have to find a midway point to get together more often. Many thanks must also go out to the organizers of OLF for putting together such a great show, without their hard work we wouldn’t have had so much fun.
I’ve posted most of the pictures I took here. I’ve got some video that I’ll get posted once I edit it.
